"Macédomienne" - Philippe Lafontaine
André Vermeulen presented the Belgian entry for the ESC 1990
in Zagreb during the news. Date of announcement 8 January 1989, exceptional
early, the RTBF has announced their candidate for the ESC in 1990. The selection
was made rather unusually, too. without any competition. The RTBF who was
responsible for sending in an artist this year chose Philippe Lafontaine.
Philippe
Lafontaine is mostly known in the
French-speaking music scene. In 1989, he had a No. 1 hit in the Charts of France
and Canada. He had a very special reason for participating in the ESC. "I'm
doing it for love for a woman, the woman that I love". The song is an ode to his
Yugoslavian wife. Philippe is married to Violette for already 12 years. He met
her while she was working in a pub. She was already mother of a daughter (16
years) from a previous marriage. Together they have two songs, of 5 and 8 years.
The Songcontest of 1990 takes place in Zagreb, Yugoslavia and Philippe's wife is
Yugoslavian. She comes from Macedonia, and therefore the title of the song is
some kind of playing with words. Actually, the right spelling of the song "La
Macedomien" - the name for a woman who comes from the Yugoslavian area
Macedonia. His
wife come from that area and because the song deals with her, he opted for this
game of words. The song is one years old actually. The song: "It's a love letter
about a little girl who comes here from Yugoslavia. From the mountains. It is a
love letter that I'll love to sing in her country. And the press is very
positive..." It's strange that the Belgian entry for the ESC won't be released
on record. But Philippe Lafontaine thinks that he cannot put a price tag on his
love declaration. That also the reason why during the press presentation of his
single, he destroyed the original pressing of the song with a hammer. This way,
he wants to prevent more copies from being pressed.
